MEAKER & SELLER Families, Somerset, England
« on: Monday 27 February 17 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about the ancestors of George Meaker and Ann Seller who married in Puriton, Somerset on 02 Feb 1768?

I'm also looking for any help with the following people:
Thomas Meaker & Mercy Meaker, born between 1730-1745
George Meaker & Diana Winter, married 20 July 1799 in Puriton
Diana Winter was supposedly born in Austria

The above are all direct ancestors.

Thank you all

Bob Meaker

PS: Any info regarding other Meakers in Somerset or Gloucestershire would be greatly appreciated.

There is one other important detail: "with the consent of her lawful father Joseph Winter".

The public trees that have her born in Austria or Jamaica look very unreliable.

There was a Joseph Winter in Pawlett who married Iset Pine in 1778 and baptised several children there over the next few years. No sign of Diana's baptism there, but Aug 1780 - Dec 1781 are missing, so it's very likely they were her parents

Thanks to all for your replies to date (01 March 2017)

Dear David (DRH 123)
Your info sounds very logical, I had been doubting the Austria connection for Diana Winter for some time.

Could you possibly tell me where these details can been found, as I have been unluck in all my searches. I have the wedding date as 20 July 1799 in Puriton.

Best regards
Bob Meaker

FreeREG and the Somerset OPCs both have transcriptions, but have missed out the bride's father. Ancestry have images of the actual register, which show the bit about the father's consent. (The OPC transcript is from the BTs which may not have that bit. I'll see about getting the FreeREG entry changed.)

It occurred to me that if Diana was the daughter of Joseph and Iset Winter then it would be quite likely that she would call a daughter Iset. Searching for Iset Meaker turns up one born about 1815 who married Joseph White in Kent in 1838, father George Meaker. In the 1861 census she gave her birthplace as Puriton. Her own eldest daughter was called Diana.  It all fits well, except for no baptism record. The pages covering 1813-1815 appear to have been torn out of the Puriton register! Seems to be a recurring problem with this family.
