John Hole c1807
« on: Monday 27 February 17 14:09 GMT (UK) »
My g g grandfather was John Hole c1805-1882. He married Jane Creech at East Quantoxhead on April 8th 1829 and remained there for the rest of his life. At death his age was given as 75, census showed variations of up to 2 years older. 1851 shows place of birth that appears to be Samford Brett. All, other census show St Decumans. I have traced all his children & their marriages. I thought I had traced some of his ancestors but then found out that another tree used the same set for a different John Hole who married at Dunster a few years later. I had Francis Hole (c1773) and Elizabeth Wood as John's parents. There were at Least 2 births of John Hole in the area at the time. If any light can be shed on this I would be most grateful. (Note that on the 1841,1851 and 1861 the family are all recorded as Hall and children married under both names)

Thank you jusnoneed. You have confirmed the information I have. I did not show it earlier to avoid pointing in a particular direction. Here is the problem On Dec 25th 1834 a John Hole married Frances Mayo @ Dunster. A tree for this John shows the same parents etc as I had for mine and so I have not put them in my tree. This other tree shows a number of children of Elizabeth and Francis - Elizabeth 1803, John 1805-71, Priscilla 1808-1841, Francis 1810, Louisa 1813, Arabella 1815, Mary 1818 Lydia 1821-24. I have not verified the siblings apart from John. To further muddy the waters there are three potential Elizabeth Woods. I suspect a dead end has been reached.

Its not necessarily a dead end, Naming patterns of children are a great help often;

Your John/Jane Baptised East Quantoxhead ;
Louisa 1830
Anne 1832, buried 1835 age 3
Susannah 1834, buried 1845 age 9
William 1837
Sarah Ann 1840
Elizabeth 1842, buried 1846 age 3
Barnet 1844
Elizabeth 1846
James 1848
George 1850

Id did notice a Marriage for a George HALL 26 Feb 1820 East Quantoxhead

All on FreeREG

If you can trace this George he may be a Brother of your John.
Your John/Jane name a Son George

Also Louisa 1830 is with them under her married name in 1861 Census
She is not there 1841/1851 Census

Will try and track her 1841 as she may be with relatives.

Trish :)

Not much help Louisa Hall is a 10yr old Servant to Thomas Stone in 1841

This appears to be George in 1851;
George Hole, 60, Head, Widr, Farm Lab, born Bicknoller, Somerset
William Hawkings, 25
Eliza Hawkings, 25, Daug, Mar
George Hawkings, 2
Charles Hawkings, 3mths
George Hole, 30, Son, Mar, Farm Lab, born West Quantoxhead
Amelia Hole, 7
Lucy Hole, 5

Cant find him in 1841

Ok back to the other John Hole;

1841 in Middlesex we have;
John Hole, 30
Frances Hole, 25
Louisa Hole, 2
Walter Hole, 4mths
John/Frances, not born in County, children are.

1851 back in Somerset we have;
John Hole, 45
Frances P Hole, 39
Herbert Hole, 14*******
Louisa Hole, 12
Walter Hole, 10
Mary Ann Hole, 4
Robert Hole, 2
Frances Hole, 4mths

1841 Herbert is with his likely Grandparents in Somerset;
Frances Hole, 66
Elizabeth Hole, 55
Mary Hole, 20
Herbert Hole, 5**********
Arabella Heckler, 25
Charles Heckler, 1

So I dont think your Johns Parents were Francis/Elizabeth.

Thank you trish for your reply. I have tracked Louisa up to present day relatives. In 1851 she was in Bristol recorded as Louisa Hale b 1829. Sarah Ann 1840 is an error. There were 2 baptisms on the same day and it seems that they were ascribed to the wrong parents. The only reference that can be found to Sarah Ann is her baptism as is the case with James Western. However Sarah Western is in the 1851 census and a death for James Hole in 1841 is recorded. I agree it is unlikely that Francis and Elizabeth were John's parents.

Hi,

I have been given a silver watch presented to a John Hole in 1868 by the Duke of Edinburgh. The watch was given to my mother in law (in Taunton, Somerset) by an elderly gentleman that she cared for possibly 30-40 years ago.

I have found out that the duke of Edinburgh at that time was Prince Alfred - second son of Queen Victoria but would like to see if I can find out a bit more about John Hole.

Any help would be appreciated.
