Most interesting discussion ... thank you all for posting.

I’m trying to find information about my grandparents, Isaac and Hettie Silver, who were born in Poland in 1865 and who emigrated to Hull in Yorkshire by 1891.  Their names appear in the England census of that year.  The family subsequently moved to South Africa, probably after 1903.

I’m assuming that the family originally had Polish passports, and they would likely have changed their names upon entering the UK, probably in 1890.  Is there some way to trace the original Polish/Jewish names prior to their changing them to what appears in the 1891 census?  Would that change be documented somewhere?

Many thanks in advance, for any help you can give me.
Ray

I was able to follow the link garstonite gave, but unfortunately it doesn't take you to a tree, but to the 1891 UK census entry which you already have.  Just in case you were thinking about forking out for Premium membership of Généanet to view the entry!

Hello,

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:75C6-BW2

In the 1891 census on Geneanet his birthplace is listed as Poland Patchna and hers as Poland Stachif "do" for the children and the lodger (If I read the names correctly).

The first thought for the family name is Zylber or Zylberberg but I am sure you already know that.

Who are the other siblings, if there is any, born in England ?

Did the family move to Cape Town ?

Do you know who are those SILVERS :

Quite right: the family name may have been Zylber or Zylberberg.

Philip Silver was born in Hull, Yorkshire, February 2, 1897.  Yes, the family emigrated to Cape Town where my father was born in 1900.  However, he had a younger brother born in Hull 29 October, 1903, so I suspect that the family moved permanently to South Africa after his birth.

Thanks for the link to the other Silver's; I don't think they are related.

Patchna and Stachif don't exist as such, as far as I can determine.  I suspect that those are Anglicized transliterations of two Polish towns.  The nearest that I can come to what they might have been are: "Opoczno" or "Opotshnah" (which is Russian) and "Staszów" (Polish), Stashev (Yiddish), Stashuv (Russian).

Again, my thanks!
