Hi Westoe

Mmm ... for the most part, the Electoral rolls showed that your Henry Thomas THOMPSON was a "storekeeper" in Canterbury (nothing to show that he was a postmaster).

However, dependent on just where in Canterbury he was located > say in a rural area >  a "storekeeper" might well also take on "the local postal agency" as part of his business.

So, although electoral rolls didn't have him listed as such, I struck gold with the 1883-84 Wises NZPO directory, which had the following listing >

1883-1884  -  Canterbury - Greendale

THOMPSON - Henry T. - storekeeper and postmaster.

[Greendale (Canterbury) :  Located 35 miles SW of Christchurch. ]

Ah! That's just lovely, Lovely, Lovely!!! Lu. Thank you. He's a merchant again in rural southwestern Ontario in the 1901 Canadian census.

Your post came in just as I was about to add some more information. I was wrong about saying those were the first two children that I gave dates for. Actually they are the first and the third.

Problem is: I have combed the New Zealand BMD's backwards and forwards and sideways and diagonally but I cannot find a birth registration for the second child, Alice Muriel Thompson. On her marriage registration in Canada in 1909, her age is given as 26 and her place of birth is given as Southbrook, New Zealand which I believe to be another rural area, so that suggests a birth year of 1883.

I am hoping that when the birth printout for the daughter born 1886 arrives, that it will include information along the lines of "x-th child and y-th daughter of ....."

Any ideas where else I should look?

Cheers,
Westoe

Re the period served as a postmaster, the book I referred to above gives exact dates and names of the post offices.

Hi Westoe

Alice's birth doesn't (as you've already found  ;D ) appear on the NZ BDM (online) birth listings.

It does however show up twice in the NZ Birth Index (published at ancestry.com).

THOMPSON - Alice Muriel
Year :   1883
Birthdate :   2nd quarter  (Apr-Jun)
Folio :  2775
Registration place :  Rangiora

THOMPSON - Alice Muriel
Year :   1883
Birthdate :    3rd quarter  (Jul-Sep)
Folio : 3895
Registration Place :  Rangiora

[Rangiora :   - Southbrook part of Rangiora ]

Hi again Westoe

If you were wanting to purchase the birth printout for Alice, NZ BDM will be able to locate the registration using the Folio numbers above.   [I'm imagining the records are both for the same Alice Muriel ? ].
Explain to BDM that Alice's registration does not come up on their online website (under variants of THOMPSON / THOMAS) ... and quote what has been found on the NZ Birth Index at ancestry.com.
(Hopefully they can also explain the reason for two listings.  ;D )

BINGO! Thank you, Lu and Minniehaha. That fills a gaping hole for me. (Smile) This is an exhausting family to research. HTT had 9 brothers and they were all peripatic - I've been chasing them all over the world. I much appreciate your help.

Cheers,
Westoe
