Balshaw familyEuxton
« on: Tuesday 28 February 17 17:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have not used  Rootschat in a number of years so feels bit rusty.

I have uncovered a new line of research - Richard Balshaw of Euxton leyland Lancashire and his son James baptised Leyland  in 1701. The family lived in Euxton.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Richard is most likely the man baptised at Leyland 1657/8...
Richard Balshaw, the sonne of William Balshaw, of Euexton baptised ffeb 26
...and probably buried there 11 March 1725/6, when he is described as a yeoman of Euxton.

James was baptised 1st April 1700, but no mention of his mother. It's possible that she was called Margaret - a widow of that name from Euxton was buried 25 November 1729, but I have not yet found a marriage.

Balshaw Lane is, of course, the main road into Euxton from Chorley, and is undoubtedly associated with the family. Balshaw House is marked on the 1849 map, pretty much opposite the current Talbot pub.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

By the way, Euxton is pronounced as "Eckston", and does NOT rhyme with Euston in London, no matter what anyone in the "media" does.
This leads to confused registry entries such as the one above, and others even more confusing. Should "Xton" refer to Euxton, or to Croston a couple of miles away?

Hi, I may be able to help a little.  Ive just bought Balshaw House and I'm currently renovating it so have done some limited research.  The Balshaw did indeed have the house from at least 1749 and probably before.
On a stone pillar there is RB1672 carved which I assume is Richard.
I have traced the family in the house up until 1930 when a James Balshaw died - he had sister and brothers in the village with Ann and Harriet dyeing in 1950 and 1951 respectively.  I have info between these periods so let me know if its of interest.
