Just looked at Emily's  1859 marriage entry and her father's name is JOHN Jarvis not James

Hi Ladyhawk

Yes, I'd come to the same conclusion. In the 1881 census Emily gives her place of birth as Kibworth;' 1891 Market Harborough.

There are two deaths for Martha Jarvis in Mkt Harborough in 1844 - presumably mother and daughter (don't know which is which!). That leaves John Jarvis free to marry Barbara (?) Grocock at the end of the following year.

I'm interested in tracing the Jarvis family back to see whether they have any connection with my other ancestral families. We have Tilley and Tansley associated with Jarvis heading back to Kibworth and Market Harborough at the time of the Civil War; and another partly connected raft in Cottingham just over the border. Was it just a coincidence that the marriage to Barbara Grocock is registered in Kettering (which includes Cottingham)

Actually the PR shows it to have been in Rushton but that does at least give me his father - Thomas, a soldier (one step back!!)

I never fail to be amazed by the remarkable near misses and coincidences that family history studies throw up. Bearing in mind that I started this thread about a Claypole (Emily Jarvis' husband's first wife), I have now placed Emily in the 1851 census working just a few doors away in Gallowtree Gate Leicester from a chap, John Chamberlain, who was intimately involved in the story of the savage murder of the 6 year old son of Sarah Ann Claypole (Mary Ann Claypole's 1st cousin) in Cottingham 25 years later - and, it should be said, the incident which started my own quest to unravel these family histories.

Sorry about that putting James instead of John.

I thought you were looking at the Jarvis family yourself Alan.
