Francis Kelly
« on: Wednesday 01 March 17 13:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My wife's 2 x Great Grandfather was Francis Kelly, born in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, in about 1816/17.

We know that he and his wife came in England and settled in London, aged 28 years he joined the Metropolitan Police, on the 20th October, 1845.

Obviously we would like to know more of his ancestry, can anyone help with this, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been in touch with the Police?

Do you know when in retired, did he get a pension?

Do you know his Police Number?

Hello,

More questions here, sorry.

You say that he and his wife came to England so presumably he married in Ireland? What was his wife's name and was she from Mohill too?
Were  there any children born in Ireland?
Do you have him in English censuses - I have looked but haven't spotted him yet.

Thanks
Heywood

I think he is on the 1851 census in Whitechapel Mddx
Archive reference HO107; Piece number 1543; Folio 39; Page 10

Francis KELLY (33) b. Ireland, Leitrim
Anne KELLY wife (28) b. Ireland, Roscommon
Ellen KELLY dau (7) b. Ireland, Roscommon
Francis KELLY son (3) b. Middx Spiddal Fields
Mary Ann KELLY dau (1) b. Middx Spiddal Fields

Seeing the birth of Ellen was in Ireland I would assume that Francis and Anne married in Ireland

I don't see them on the 1861 but the family is on the 1871 still in the same area with several more children
Anne is now deceased and Francis is described as a widower
Locating the birth certificate of one of the children would give Anne's surname and help search for a marriage

Thank you for the interest shown , thus far.

Originally most of what we had was from the Census Returns.   I did however obtain a birth certificate of one of the children, Walter Ternes Kelly, born in 1857, and as MyLuck mentioned Anneís surname was  recorded.  She was formerly Ann Lester, and as we know from the Census she was born in Roscommon.

As their first child Ellen was also born in Roscommon itís possible/probable that the marriage was in that county.

I do have records re Francis from the Metropolitan Police which include his warrant number, date of joining and retirement date, he did receive a pension.  Itís from these records that I have his place of birth as Mohill.   There is nothing else in those records that take us any further, he gave his age as 28 when he joined so presumably he was born around 1816/17 as previously mentioned, as he joined the Met on the 20th October, 1845..

I am grateful to Rathmore, Heywood and MyLuck for their time and effort, any further information would be greatly appreciated.

Ian
