William Moore, Portsea
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 15:40 GMT (UK) »
I have been looking for William Moore for some time, without success. His son James Moore was born in Portsea, Hampshire in 1834. James' son James John Moore was also born in Portsea in 1861. The only information I have about William (from my mother in law - source unknown) is that he was a shipbuilder, and there may be a connection to Fishbourne. There is more than one Fishbourne, and I don't know which one. Any leads would be very much appreciated!

The marriage for his son James Moore should give an occupation for William.

I would immediately think of Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight as it's across from Portsea.

Have you found James on the 1841/1851 census?  That might help  :)

This one has a William and a James in the same Portsea household

1841

William Moore 30 coast guard Navy
Eliza 25
James 7
William 3
George 1

Spanner in the works with that one is that nobody but George is actually born in Hampshire  :-\

www.genuki.org/big/Coastguards
British Coastguards and their Families website

There is James Moore/More born Fishbourne. Also has other information about him. If you have not used it before
 I would recommend it.

Hope I have entered the web address properly for you. If not, just do a search for "British Coastguards and their
Families".

Thank you for all the replies. I was surprised to have so many so quickly! I will be looking into everything suggested. All the information I currently have is from my mother in law. William was her G Grandfather. I need to find out if she knows anything else, and perhaps more importantly, if she is absolutely sure of her facts. I need to get to Winchester to look at the records there sometime, but I am in the midlands and don't drive, so it may be a while.
Thanks again for all the help.
