Just noting from the Obituary of Archibald STEWART (1815-1895) [see the link given at Reply # 5]  ..."At the age of eleven years, he (Archibald) went with his parents to Nova Scotia.."
As you now know that Euphemia McLEOD married Choan STEWART in Canada (Breton), it seems logical that Canada is where Choan's first wife, Anna died.

Thank you Lu! I didn't have that so really appreciate it. Apparently Choan and Effy married in Nova Scotia but I'm struggling to find any proof.. and without any dates for Anna Macpherson I'm struggling to find her in Scotland  gah haha

Hi Jess  ... well that is the reason I've suggested you post your query to the Canada board.   
We don't really have resources in New Zealand to be able to help with this aspect of your research.

Archibald and his family apparently spent 30-odd years in Canada before coming on to New Zealand.    There should (at least) be Canada census records which will hopefully give you some snippets of information. 
*  Start with finding the year Choan (Kenneth) STEWART married Euphemia - that will give an indication of the time frame in which Anna (MacPHERSON) STEWART likely died.   *  Then see if a death record for Anna is available ... and if so, what information that yields.   (You need to be working "backwards" with this.    )

... just adding link to Archibald STEWART's Probate file (with copy of Will) in case you're interested.   (It names his wife and children and the bequests he made to them.)

Not sure if you already have this ?  ... it was sort of hidden away in Archives' listings ... and actually filed some six years after his death in 1901.  !!!
