Brighton 1956 lookup?
« on: Friday 03 March 17 22:07 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone assist with a Brighton 1956 directory?

A death of a relation at 22 Sudeley Street was registered by an "M H Munns". Despite searching 1939 Register/poss death etc etc, nothing found.

Any hope?

Jonathan

Was 22 Sudeley Street also the residence of M H Munns?
This might be a possibility -
Marriage, June 1958 Brighton
Munns, Mabel H. - spouse Gurney

Death, Dec 1964 Brighton
Gurney, Mabel H.
age 77

Hi
She would have to have been either a widow or an elderly spinster of course, for that death to be the correct one.
I can't see any birth of a Mabel H Munns
A Mabel H Brown married Thomas J Munns in Lewisham in 1914
Seem to have had twins registered in Dartford RD in Sep qtr 1917, one of whom was Lionel T Munns
A Lionel T Munns (there was only one!) died in Hove in 1967, age 50

Baptism for him and his twin on FreeReg, 5 Sep 1917, Erith
Lionel Thomas Munns
born 11 June
parents Thomas John + Mabel Henrietta
father an Engineer

Thank you very much for all this, jonw.

Maddeningly, none of them left probates to check for the address, but as Mabel & Charles Gurney & Lionel Munns all died in Hove, it's less likely to be the right M H Munns, as Sudeley Street is in Kemptown, East Brighton.

If all else fails, there's a public member tree on Ancestry which gives exact death dates for Charles & Mabel, so its owner may have death certificates.

Post Office Telephone Directory, June 1958, Brighton
Munns Rev. L. T, St Francis Moulscoomb wy, 7 Brighton 61606

Couple of other Munns listed

I wouldn't discount the Munns dying in Hove, they may have moved there as the character of Kemp Town changed in the 50s and 60s - a fair number of properties were being let as student accommodation and many areas had become somewhat run down.  22 Sudeley Street looks nice now as does the rest of the street, interesting that houses up to 22 have basements and 26 onwards but not 22 and 24.

Although Brighton & Hove were separate entities until they merged there wasn't really any boundary between them.  It may seem a distance between East Brighton and Hove but along the seafront it is not very far at all.  I'm sure no-one would have considered it a barrier to travel.

Here's a photo of Father Munns of St Joseph's, apparently taken late 1940s. Occasion being a visit by the Archbishop of Southwark
http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__9727.aspx

Someone suggests that Father Munns may have died of a heart attack

St Joseph and St Francis Catholic Parish Brighton, newsletter from a couple of years ago -
Mass - Mabel Henrietta Munns RIP (Foundation)
No idea what that means.
Looking like this priest was Mabel's son Lionel Thomas.
