Query re marriage in Holywell 1849 - Stoddart & Williams
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Please can someone help me sort this out please?

I have a copy certificate for the marriage of Owen STODDART to Harriet WILLIAMS on 30th March 1849 at the Parish Church in Holywell.  I have also seen the original register entry on Findmypast. They agree, although FindMyPast transcribes the marriage as taking place at Bagilt.  At this date I think Bagilt was a chapelry in the parish of Holywell, but not the parish church (St. James).

But I have now found two sets of Banns (on FindMyPast) for this couple and am confused.  The first is for November 1847: FindMyPast transcribes both parties as otp, but the image shows the groom as "of Sunderland".  The second is for March 1848; they are both otp.  The image shows that the Banns register has no year date included.  There are no Banns for 1849 on FindMyPast, and the previous ones would have expired.

I cannot believe that there are two couples with the same names involved in this muddle.

Owen and Harriet were both born in Holywell, and living in Greenfield (Holywell) at the time of their marriage.

Grateful for any help,
Melbell.

Hi,

If you look back on the images you will find that the Banns for March 1848 start on page 162. Owen and Harriett's Banns are on page 182 therefore it would seem that the Banns are for 1849 and not 1848 as transcribed.

Hello JJen

Thanks very much - aren't you clever!  I should have thought of that.

Do you have any thoughts about whether the marriage took place in Holywell or in Bagilt please?

Have checked to see if the front cover has any reference to Bagillt but unfortunately there is no image of the cover. However I presume there must be some connection to Bagillt for the transcribers to make reference to it on the transcription.

Thank you for doing that.  I wonder if Bagilt didn't have a separate register because it was a chapelry of Holywell?  But I still think it's funny that the marriage cert says the marriage took place in the Parish Church and FindMyPast says it was at Bagilt.  I suppose it could just be their mistake.

Thanks again for your help,
Melbell

Flintshire BMD tells us that the marriage did in fact take place at Holywell St James.

William

I expect you know a lot more than I do about the area.  I am floundering around- no doubt like thousands of others - trying to work out who's who in a series of families called Jones, Thomas and Williams!
