Convert old FTW file to use on new FamilyTreeMaker
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi! I have been trying to open an older FTW file with my new Family Tree Maker program. I am told I need to have a copy of the older program, open the file and then convert it? There used to be links to download a trial version of the older program, but I can only find one for Windows and I use MAC. Is there anyone out there who has the old program who would be willing to convert this if I sent it to you? Many thanks!!!
Eve

Just a thought - you could possibly use the free version of Legacy or RootsMagic to import your data:

"Legacy Family Tree and RootsMagic are examples of competing products that can read FTW databases directly and write a better GEDCOM file.!"

From http://www.tamurajones.net/FTWGEDCOM.xhtml

I haven't tried it so whatever you do, keep a copy of your original FTW file(s) for now at least.

If you are successful, either of those programs even in free mode will be an order of magnitude better than Family Tree Maker.

Hi

Just adding to Paul's note.

I like Legacy but you have to pay to get the better printed ouput styles.

My version of Legacy did not like the gedcom
Nor did FTM

I stripped out the "pre-amble" and then it worked.
Then regenerated an FTM v5.5 from FTM
