Out of ideas
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 22:35 GMT (UK) »
John Spalding and Anne Barclay had a son in 1867 in Banffshire. The child was illegitimate. Anne and John never did marry. Anne married someone else.
John was born around 1849 to John and Anne Spalding nee Wallace. I have him on the 1881 census aged 32 in gartlly unmarried. Then he completely vanishes. No sign of death cert, passenger ship entries, nothing. Anybody got a suggestion? I'm curious why him and Anne Barclay never married.

In 1871, he looks to be a servant in a household at Cocklarachy, Drumblade, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Given he was born Kincardineshire, had a child Banffshire, and worked Aberdeenshire, so obviously moved around, have you checked age appropriate deaths in different areas?

There is a Kincardineshire born John Spalding, of similar birth year, in the 1911 England census.

There is a Scottish born John Spalding, single, born c1848,  died Vancouver, Canada in 1923. This chap looks to have been in Vancouver at time of 1891 census, possibly under Spaulding. He was single and a lodger in the household.

Hi Robbj,

Have you ruled this chap out from England 1901 Census
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X98K-DQ1

Year of birth and place of birth are similar.

Looby :)

Thank you all. I hadn't found this John Spalding in a 1901 census in England. It looks possible. As does the Canadian one.
If he had a 17 year old daughter in 1901 then that might suggest the disappearance out of Scotland in 1881 and possibly off to England.
