Railways
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 22:40 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone out there with any knowledge of the railways and workers around 1920+? My great grandfather worked and I'm told was quite high up on the railways possibly a station master but I'm struggling to find any info. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Meg

All British Rail records going back to the early 1800's are housed at Kew. Vast amount of detail should find info there.
West, Alexander, Banham, Balchin.

Was he still working in 1939?, if so you can see his occupation on the 1939 register.

Ancestry has some Railway records.
But you need to know which company he worked for? Or which station?

Where was he living? That might pin it down.

Tricky! There are/were a number of railway station in Acton!

Acton station (now called Acton Main Line) would have been part of the Great Western Railway.

Acton Station, renamed Acton Central was operated by the North & South Western Junction Railway. Taken over by the London & North Western Railway in 1909.
From 1923 part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway.

South Acton station was on the North London Line and the District Line.

Chiswick Park and Acton Green. District Railway.

Acton Town station also part of the District Line.

East Acton on the Central Line.

North Acton operated by GWR.
West Acton also operated by GWR.

Have you tried the London Transport Staff Registers on Ancestry?

You can search by name on that.
