Manchester Comedian
« on: Sunday 05 March 17 10:06 GMT (UK) »
I will apologise in advance for being a bit vague, but does anybody know of a man who was on the Manchester Comedy scene in the early 1950's who was called or went under the name of Edge/Hedge.

My Brother recently related to a story told to him by our Father, some time back.

Seemingly a British Merchant Seaman killed one of his shipmates and then dispatched the body through the port hole. My Father was at home and it came on the radio. His Mother and Grandmother heard it and went 'oooh', then made a remark which made my father assume that he was a fairly close relative. As he was still at home, I would assume it was early 50's, possibly late 40's.

Here's hoping, Eric.

Hi
Hartlepool Daily Mail 19 Aug 1954 has a piece about a comedian Jack Edge who was recovering in hospital, it says his real name was Jack Hayton and he was born in Manchester in 1891.

Various small mentions of Jack Edge comedian , late 20 s thru to 40s.

Hi Cath.

I think you may have cracked it. Riverside Ave rings a bell somewhere.

Jack Edge or Hayton don't ring any bells anywhere, but you never know.

I'll pm you my e-mail if that's ok.

Many thanks for that Cath. He's definitely the one.

That solves the bit about the killing, but I'm not sure that the Comedian bit is connected. I think the the one in Hartlepool is a Red Herring. Maybe it's one of those tales that got twisted over time.

Thanks, Eric.

Hi, Jack Edge was my grandfather, its so strange as I've just been putting together all the photos, contracts, panto programmes and so forth on him. I've had all these for a few years since my Mother past. I just happened to Google Jack Edge and up this post popped, most surprising.
So If you have any other information on my Grandfather I would be most appreciative.

Nick

Hi Nick.

Welcome to RootsChat.

I'm not sure there will be much that you don't already know. The family is a bit of a mystery to me. I only know one relative who knows anything about him. However, you never know.

Just to help me get my bearings, what was your Mother's name?

Regards, Eric.

Hi    thank you for getting back to me, My Grandfather was Jack Hayton this being his real name, Edge was his stage name. My Mother was Jill Hayton and my Uncle Ian Hayton.

I do have a lot of grandads paper cuttings and panto programmes and I've recently been introduced to the  National Newspaper archives, which is a wonderful window to the past for anyone to look at. There  are dozens of entries over the years in there for Jack Edge and also relating to my great Grandfather Tom Hayton.

Should you have any other stories or information it would be most welcome.

Kind Regards

Nick
