1842 - Medical Training in Liverpool
« on: Sunday 05 March 17 14:41 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor married in Birmingham (occupation Blacksmith) in 1839.  He inherits a significant sum in 1839 from his London-based uncle.

In 1841/2 he is living in Liverpool, near Lime Street Station, occupation Surgeon and/or shopkeeper.

In 1844 he is back in Birmingham as an Accoucheur/Surgeon's assistant till the 1860's.

My theory is that he used his inheritance to train as a surgeon in Liverpool.

Does anyone know where he would have trained and whether any medical students records might exist??

He was Edward William Wright, born 1818 and baptised in Hackney London.  By 1839 he had moved to Birmingham, I actually suspect some time after 1825.

There is no Edward William Wright in the 1859 Medical Register. Had he died by then?

No. Don't have my records to hand but he died in the 1870s as far as I remember.   He practiced as an Accoucheur in Birmingham , although in the early days he said surgeon and his daughter said Surgeon's Assistant when she got married after his death.

Does this mean that perhaps he never qualified properly?

Is there a Midwives register?

Thanks for checking.

Thanks for linking them.

EWW was not the 'good boy' that I had pictured.  When you are just looking at census info you miss out on the bits in between.

More research tomorrow....

Thanks to everyone for your help in unravelling a mystery I didn't know existed!
