Hay/Ledgerwood confusion?!
« on: Monday 06 March 17 12:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi I don't know if anybody can help? We seem to have hit a bit of a family mystery, I am trying to trace the birth of my great grandfather, Robert "ledgerwood". He was born in Midlothian, edingburgh I think abt 1893. The problem is I don't think he was born as ledgerwood but changed his name to this to flee his parents and join the Gordon Highlanders?! He went by ledgerwood since he joined our family and married Annie Harriss in Dec 1920. As far as we know his fathers surname was Hay and his mothers first name Jane and they also had Abigail ledgerwood Hay. So not sure if he stole the name from there or if his mothers maiden name was ledgerwood or generations back? Any help would be gratefully received many thanks!

Hi

This might be relevant but needs chasing up ~ ScotlandsPeople are showing a marriage of a Jane Margaret Ledgerwood and a David Park Hay, Coldstream, 1895

The Dec 1920 marriage cert should give his father's name.  If you haven't got it, I think it would be worth obtaining it.

Have you found Robert on the 1901/1911 censuses or 1939 register?

Adding this as possible, given the marriage that I found on previous message:

A Jane Ledgerwood in 1891 which might fit:

Cumin Place, St Cuthbert, Edinburgh
Margaret McGlashan, unm, 75, living on private means, b. Midlothian
Jane Ledgerwood, unm, 18 servant, b. Coldstream

Also:

1901
Elm Row, High Street, Lasswade, Midlothian
David Hay, 29, Baker, b. Bonnyrigg
Jane, 28, b. Coldstream
Robert, son, 8, b. Coldstream
Samuel, s, 5, b. -do-
Jeanie, d, 3, b. -do-
Thomas, s, 1, b. -do-

And SP are showing the birth of a Robert Ledgerwood (illegitimate) , in Coldstream, Dec 16 1892. Mother given as Jane Ledgerwood, domestic servant. No father's name entered.

If this is him, this might explain a change of surname if he needed a birth cert for army or something and found his birth surname.

Added - this birthdate is extremely relevant for a search of later info.

And -  he died on10 Nov 1954 at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. Usual residence ~ The Post Office, Watlington, Oxfordshire.

I agree with Gadget.

Just from the other side of the pond  ;).

You made mention of Abigail Ledgerwood HAY:
Abigail coming into the US:

Sister Jean's Marriage:

This family is difficult! EDIT: Sorry- I didn't read that marriage cert correctly. Now I understand.

Thank you both so much for your help! There seems to be quite a few illegitimate children in our family popping up and alot of name swapping! I do appreciate the advice  :)
