James Thomson and Janet Cochran had a son David baptised 12 Jan 1818. This David must have died as they had another son David baptised 11 Sept 1820

Why do you think his father was named Thomas?

Looks like there are two families headed up by a different James Thomson, from what you have found Rosie. Both look to have died post 1855 so hopefully easier to confirm details for them and establish which may be the correct one.

ThumbelinaPM  from the information you provided in the 1841 census and 1851 census Monica posted
This family all born Strathaven ...James Thomson birth year is always about 1793 so there is a possibility the link for a birth Monica posted is this James ..
In 1861 Census address Todshill Avondale Strathaven transcribed as Thomason

James Thomason age 68 b 1793 Strathaven ( cotton weaver )
Margaret Thomason age 20 b Strathaven ...

There is a death for a Janet Thomson 1855 Avondale age 58 ref 621/116 same reference Janet Cochran ...Suggest you get certificates if this is your family

Hi all, being new to this I wasn't quite prepared for such a huge and helpful response.
I started to doubt what I knew so have gone back to my ancestor PETER THOMSON born around 1820, married to Janet Eddie born 02.02.1823 (daug of Robert Eddie & Janet Louden)

So Peter Thomson is the son of JAMES Thomson who I am trying to trace. I know he is a weaver and became a town councillor in Airdrie.
I believe my Peter is son of James and Ann but can't find their marriage or birth certs so any help there greatly appreciated. I do think James & Ann had another son James (born after my Peter) and that he became an Architect.
Thanks in advance!

Thumbelina, it is really easy to go track if you don't verify as much of the details as you can...

The name James Thomson is quite common, so we had been discussing a James Thomson with a wife Janet up to now.

With your line being a son Peter, this is most likely his parents. I think mother is Ann Buchannan. From 1841:

James Thomson 45 weaving agent
Ann Thomson 45
Peter Thomson 20 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTF5-RDQ (Patrick and Peter are common variants)
James Thomson 15

Address: Aitchison St, Airdrie

1851:

James Thomson 59 weaving agent b. Glasgow
Ann Thomson 62 b. Govan

Address: 70 Aitchison St, Airdrie

And this is your direct line Peter in 1851?

Peter Thomson 31 Baker (master Emp 3 Men) b. Airdrie
Janet Thomson 27
James Thomson 5
Robert Thomson 2
Mary Jeffery 26

Address 74 High Street, Airdrie

There is a death and a will & testament entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

One James Thomson, aged 64, died in Airdrie/New Monkland in 1855- ref 651/1 133 The original image for this death will include as standard spouse's name (if married) and parents' names if known to the informant. 1855 was the first year of official registration in Scotland, and for one year only included a wealth of extra info about the deceased.

There is also a will/testament entry (likely inventory?) showing: James Thomson - 24/7/1855 - portioner and agent in Airdrie. Inventory; Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories SC36/48/41

Would be worth checking out perhaps?

Which of their children is your connection?

Monica

We had this from earlier. If you, I would check the death details on SP and confirm whether it is the correct James. This would give you his parents details to work from. This 1855 death cert should also list all his children and other pieces of info only available on an 1855 death registration.
