If they used the naming tradition then his father would be David Thomson

1841 census James and Janet Thomson, children:

David age 20 Cotton Hand Mill Weaver (like his father Jame)
Ann age 10
Janet age 6
Margaret 8 mnths

Thats why I think they may have had a child before David

As Sancti mentioned earlier, given early born son's name (David), possible James' father could have been a David. A possible birth here for James to a David https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKT-P8B

There is a death and a will & testament entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

One James Thomson, aged 64, died in Airdrie/New Monkland in 1855- ref 651/1 133 The original image for this death will include as standard spouse's name (if married) and parents' names if known to the informant. 1855 was the first year of official registration in Scotland, and for one year only included a wealth of extra info about the deceased.

There is also a will/testament entry (likely inventory?) showing: James Thomson - 24/7/1855 - portioner and agent in Airdrie. Inventory; Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories SC36/48/41

Would be worth checking out perhaps?

Which of their children is your connection?
