Daniel Murray 87th Regiment No 1054
« on: Tuesday 07 March 17 12:15 GMT (UK) »
I have found Daniel Murray a corporal with the 87th in Newcastle Barracks in 1841 aged '25' so 25 - 29. HO107; Piece: 847; Book: 8; Civil Parish: St Andrew; County: Northumberland; Enumeration District: Newcastle Upon Tyne Cavalry Artillery and Infantry Barracks; Folio: 4; Page: 2; Line: 2 also in Worldwide Army Index 1841 Daniel Murray service number 1054 Corporal 87th Foot Depot Year 1841 Carlisle & Tynemouth WO 12/8983 British Army.

In the 1841 census he is listed next to Cpl Philip Murray 25 [but who I  know to have been born in 1814 as he is my direct ancestor] whose service number was 1053. I am working on an idea that they were brothers who enlisted together as the numbers are consecutive. Any information about Daniel may lead to finding Philip's parents. Philip enlisted in Nenagh in 1837 & his place of birth has been a brick wall for years. I have Philip's army record. See another thread

Can anyone help with Daniel's attestation or any other records please?

Many thanks, Josey

Just bringing this up again with some new info.

I found Daniel in the 1851 army worldwide index still in the 87th, in Chatham; however I can't find him on the 1851 census...which would give more accurate age & with any luck place of birth.
First name(s)   Daniel
Last name   Murray
Name as transcribed   Daniel
Year   1851
Service number   -
Rank   Private
Regiment or unit   Depot. 87th Regiment Of Foot (Royal Irish Fusliers)
Period   01/01/1851-31/03/ 1851
Location   Chatham
The National Archives reference   WO 12/8992
Record set   British Army, Worldwide Index 1851

Still have not found army service records, but they may not have survived.

Also this - same regiment but a different service  number:
Indian Mutiny Medal Roll 1857-1859 Transcription
Print transcription
First name(s)   Daniel
Last name   Murray
Year   1857-59
Service number   3106
Rank   Private
Regiment   87th Foot (Royal Irish Fusiliers)
Notes   Died 20 October 1857
Medal type   Indian Mutiny Medal, 1857-1859
Country   Great Britain

If they are the same Daniel Murray the fact he died in service in 1857 explains the lack of service record - as I understand it the records were only kept when a soldier was discharged to pension & were destroyed if he died before then.

Oh, thanks very much, I will take a look. Age is 10 years out but who knows....so could actually be the service number 3106. Really need to get to Kew to see the muster rolls. Thanks again.

Just reviving this thread. 1851 census that gortonboy found: HO107; Piece: 1611; Folio: 793; Page: 13

I found the Indian Mutiny medal award on forces-war-records but haven't got a subs. If anyone has access I would be very interested to know if age at death in India in 1857 is given as this may differentiate between 1054 born ca 1816 & 3106 born ca 1829. I will look too on rootsireland.ie for the baptisms [my feeling is that 1054 should have been baptised in Borrisokane, Tipp, 3106 said to have been born in Saul, Down].

ADDED: Saul parish registers on nli are only from 1868 & Borrisokane from 1821 so no luck there.
