Aghadowey / shanlongford / Mckeever
« on: Tuesday 07 March 17 17:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, over the last few years I have tried to find out more information on my grandfather & his family but haven't been too successful but here I am again with fingers crossed someone out there can help me.  My grandfather was David Frances Mckeever from shanlongford ringsend coleraine.  I have found him on census 1901 & 1911, which was a great find as we had very little info on his parents - David & Ellen (nee Kelly) which both died when he was very young, we now also know he had brothers & sisters.  I found a little info on them but not a lot!  Can anyone help with what school they might of addended in this area & of possible farm names in Shanlongford?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards :)

Welcome to rootschat  :).

brothers & sisters.  I found a little info on them but not a lot!
To prevent anyone wasting time & looking up info you already have it would be a good idea if you can tell us what you DO know, however little that is.

Oops...He was born 1909.

His parents I believe died 1914, although I have no death certificates to proof this but I'm desperate to know where he went after this & what happened to his brothers & sisters. Unfortunately I never knew my grandfather but my dad & family say he never spoke of his life in Ireland other than his parents dying.

of possible farm names in Shanlongford?
There is a list of townlands here
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/
Shanlongford is in the civil parish of Errigal.

There is a website with old Ireland maps which will show the farms, can't find it at the moment....

No need to have two topics on the same subject as it causes needless confusion.

Assuming you aren't familiar with the area-
Shanlongford is the townland (this will be considered the property's address- it was only about 1970 that we got road names and postcodes)
Here's a map showing the townland-
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/coleraine/errigal/shanlongford/
It's quite likely the property didn't have a name of its own (haven't looked to see exactly where it might be but if it's in Shanlongford I can see part of it and walk to it from my home)
Ringsend is the enumeration district for the census as well as the local post office (now closed) so this might appear on letters addressed to the family.
Coleraine is the nearest town but it's about 8-9 miles away from Shanlongford.

The 1911 census (link given above) says there were 14 children but only 8 living although there could be others born after the census was taken (April 1911).

Here's the 1901 census (transcription duplicated for some reason)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Ringsend/Shanlongford/1516687

Both census have links to the pages that will give details on house, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

for reference

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Ringsend/Shanlongford/587726/
. This is correct & the only info I have on them.  I found a Betty & John Mckeever also from shanlongford,  which would be my grandfathers grandparents

In the kindest possible way - even in a small place, I hope you are not making this assumption without proof...perhaps you have David & Ellen's marriage cert or David's baptism?
