The name Berreck - origins?
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 07:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi people,

this could well be the wrong place to post a question like this, and I apologise if that is the case.

One of my ancestors has the middle name Berreck and I have no idea how she happened to have this name except a suspicion that the name may have East European origins.

There are only a handful of people in the UK historical records with this surname and most of them lived in the 1600s. The name seems to have morphed into Berwick over time.

There are no places in the UK named Berreck so far as I can see.

So I can't understand how someone born in 1804 could have this as a middle name.
Is it possible that Berreck is a gypsy/immigrant name?

Any guidance appreciated.

Just so this one doesn't sit here unanswered, David; I've got a book of names recorded as given by Gypsys. Berreck / Berwick isn't listed.

Now, as I'm always at pains to point out; No one's saying the author discovered every name Ever used. But, he was pretty bloody good and thorough.
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

Thanks Steve..

I've since looked at more documents and learned that the true spelling of the name is Benneck, which I've been able to trace back to Germany as BENICKE.

Thanks for checking..
