Melton family daughter of Pakenham 1840
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 11:33 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the family of Richard Melton and Jane Balls, who appear on the 1841 census with a daughter of 6 months (Probably born Dec 1840) The name has been transcribed as N K Melton and a birth record of a Melton in the Thingoe Rural District, which includes Pakenham, has a "Female" Melton registered for that time. I am not 100% convinced of the initials,  and have tried looking at several pages of the census to find similar. the K could be R etc. I cannot find the girl on the 1851 census and cannot find a death either. Any help with the name most welcome.

N K is not known isn't it?

Could it be she was younger than 6 months, like 6 days and hadn't yet been named  :-\

There is a gap on the 1851 where a 10 year old would be so the likelihood is she passed away and there is a death tucked away somewhere.

There's a Sarah death in Thingoe 1842 and an Elizabeth
Ann in 1844
Jane in 1847
Mary Ann in 1848
Anna in 1850 and a Frances

Checking the ages for those the most likely is Anna age 9 in 1850.

N K is how it has been transcribed by a genealogy site. The 1841 census was conducted on 6th June 1841. The age of the child on the census says aged 6 months so either Nov or Dec 1840 would be the actual time of birth.

Surely the child would have been named by 6 months old. I wondered if it is N K and the name was Not Known??? My difficulty is that there were other Melton families in Thurston and other Thingoe Reg District villages at that time. Thanks for the possible clue.

Taken from Pakenham parish register

Ellen d/o Richard and Jane Melton baptised 9th Jan 1842
Marianne d/o Richard and Jane Melton baptised 13th Jan 1839

I couldn't see any Melton baptism between these two entries in the register.

Thanks annes. I think you have cracked  her name. I have a Mary Ann (Name as it appears on several years of Census) your Marianne. The N K Melton is almost certainly Ellen who on the 1851 census is living with grandmother Sarah Balls (Nee Bailey) aged 10 and other info from that ties in nicely. Cheers!! However after tracking her to Bury St Edmunds as a servant of Rev Oakes of Nowton, I cant find a marriage or death.
