My other thought is (depending on age & where born) could he have been registered elsewhere with other family?

I wonder what his occupation was?

That won't help looking for the death but could discount the address given possibly?

From the link Scotmum provided a James Adam Bell lived there in 1901 age 56 along with his sisters Maggie B Bell 58,Jessie A Bell 60 both teacher's ..Mary J Marwick age 25 ( Ronsay Orkney ) domestic

We have acquired a sampler from Edinburgh on which is embroidered the following ' Jesus wept  Behold how he loved him - Alastair Macleod  St Andrews Cottage 1909.  All this was in black thread which seemed, along with the quote, to imply a death. I hope this makes things a bit clearer. I suppose it is possible that the sampler was completed in 1909 by Alastair Macleod whilst a pupil at the Bell's day school? Was there another reason for him to be connected with St Andrew's cottage?
