Hi SW,

For anyone to do a look-up, you need to provide a name/date or yr of birth at least for 'Admissions Registers?

In all the years I have been using www.workhouses.org.uk, I never noticed that page! :-\
Hence my convoluted reply ;D

Hi Annie

This indeed is true. Shows how knackered I was last night for such a schoolgirl error.

I'm researching Susannah Powell, born 1867 (but frequently claims to be younger) Brosely area. Marries Alfred Overton March 1914 and dies in Wellington workhouse 16/4/1945 claiming age 71.

It is now confirmed that what the death entry has written as 18 1/2 (eighteen and a half), which I thought peculiar, is actually 181 - 2.  Gotta lurv bureaucracy.

You are a star! Thank you so much! That is a site which seems to have slipped under the radar, and not just mine either.

The 18 1/2 (quite clearly written as a fraction) on the death entry, which did strike me as peculiar, is, of course, 181 - 2 which makes far more sense.

This evening I will be reading far more thoroughly, starting with what they can tell me about the Poor Laws.

Yeah, thanks, I'd found that description online. What I want to know is whether the address used for the institution in 1945 is that on the death certificate.

Did you look at the Workhouse Addresses page?

Ummm yeah - while I was asleep! So sorry. I didn't mean to cause offence by acknowledging someone's help when I caught up with it. Perhaps I should make sure never to do it again - or maybe never to sleep or leave the computer for however long it takes to receive a useful reply. Which would you recommend, given all your experience?

Stitch.
