Jottings on the 1939 Directory
« on: Sunday 12 March 17 15:50 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to decipher the marginal notation in the left hand column of a page in the Daventry, Northamptonshire section of the 1939 directory.

I know that at the time, the person concerned was single and living with her mother. She married in 1941. So, her maiden name is entered but crossed out. Her married name is then entered but again crossed out. As you can see from the enclosed cutting, a third name, CLAYFORD, appears here with the abbreviations NR220 KGA (which stands for the West Riding of Yorkshire) There is also (?) a date 9/12/46

My question is: what does NR220 mean

I haven't found a potential second marriage in that surname for that date.

Alan
Leicester / Northampton: Craxford,  Claypole, Pridmore, Pollard, Tansley, Crane, Tilley
Derby: Naylor, Ball, Haywood
Buckinghamshire: Cook
London: Craxford, Lane Crauford
Tyneside: Nessworthy, Simpson

The 1946 date was when an adjustment was made to the entry, maybe it was her marriage details amended after the war

She died as Clayford in 1992

Did her first husband die before she 'remarried'  or was it a name change :-\

I'm still looking into that one - I think he was a Japanese POW and died towards the end of 1942.
She did marry again - in June 1954 (to Mr Clayford **) so still doesn't explain the NR220 note

Cheers Alan

** If you look at my surnames of interest, I had wondered if she had taken a contraction of two of the names as her own!

As the district in N Riding was Leeds and she later married there maybe it was changed to her first married name when she applied for a new ration card at a new address.
