India - Edward Middleditch Rowland, Mary Wood and Anne Mott
« on: Sunday 12 March 17 18:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Hit a brick wall.
Could anyone help please with a look up on any information concerning Edward Middleditch Rowland and his two wives Mary Wood and Anne Mott in Byculla, Bombay, India. Dates would be approximately 1850 - 1860.
Can't wait to see what you might come up with.
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

Did he end up as a Ship's Steward living (and died) in Southampton?

The London Gazette (bottom of second column).

Thanks Giggsy. You've got the right person there. That's a big help.
We are just trying to find out what happened to both families while they were in India up until 1860.

You don't say what information you already have, but per the 1855 marriage register (Anne Mott) he was a P&O steward.

Hello Shaun
Thank you for your reply. I'm actually asking for information on behalf of a friend.
As far as I can remember, Edward Middleditch Rowland married Mary Wood in 1850 in Newington, London and they travelled out to India, presumably in his capacity as a P&O steward. They had at least one child in 1851 in India and possibly two, but then sadly, Mary died, but we don't know when or how but think it is in the Bombay area.
We are trying to trace Edward and Mary during their time in India between Oct 1851 and Nov 1855 and what happened to them. Within a very short time of Mary dying (sometime between those two dates), Edward had met Anne Mott and they married in 1855 in Bombay. As far as we know, their first son together was born in 1858 in Bombay but they must have travelled back to UK as their 2nd child was born in Hanwell, Middlesex in 1860. There were more children to follow until Edward's death at sea in 1866.
Any ideas as to where we could glean some more information on Edward and Mary and their time in India would be fantastic.
Regards
Sue

There was a daughter Mary buried 17 April 1853 at Back Bay, Bycullah, aged 18 months. Father Edward Rowland, P&O service. You probably already have her baptism in 1851?

Hello again Shaun
This info you are coming up with is great.
Yes, we have a Mary Eliza Rowland's birth in Bombay on 15th October 1851. And I am sure that my friend has a record of a death in 1853, so I'm assuming that is the same one.
I will double check with my friend.
Thank you very much.
