Who was Henry Curtis?
« on: Monday 13 March 17 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for Henry Curtis prior to his marriages!

Henry Curtis married Martha Wilson in York on the 25th August 1874. From the age given on the certificate his year of birth was 1855 and his father was Thomas Curtis (a labourer).
The 1881 census confirms his place of birth as Hull b: c1852
Martha died in 1882 and Henry remarried in York on the 23rd January 1886 to Mary Ann Wray. From his age given on the certificate his year of birth is now 1857 and father is named as Arthur (deceased) a butcher?
The 1891 census finds them living in York with Mary's father, Thomas and brother, John Wray. Year of birth given as 1859.
He died in 1899, aged 43 years (year of birth c1856)
By 1901 Mary is living in 19 Albany Street, York with their three children; Mary, Winifred and Thomas Henry, and her stepson, Richard Curtis.
Richard appears on the 1881 census with Henry and Martha; he was their eldest son, born c1875.

Henry consistently gives his place of birth as Hull, but his birth year varies, as does the name of his father!
Can anybody locate him in 1861 or 1871?

Thanks

Sue

I think this will the first child of Henry & Martha;  (Richard 1875)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW9Q-X8K

and Mary ann Curtiss in 1876?

Age discrepancies can arise from "decency" if the partner is much older/younger, so what's given on each marriage for the bride? and on the census?

Wow! Thanks everyone...he has been a nightmare. Can't quite understand the two different father's though. Unless his mother has remarried.

I'm not sure about that 1852 birth record, shown on the GRO index as MMN Harrison

The 1871 census noted by Carol has another son - Frederick Curtis aged 5 & born Yorkshire.  The 1881 shows him as Frederick A Curtis, born York.  From the GRO Index:

CURTIS, FREDERICK  AUGUSTUS       MMN: MCLAREN
GRO Reference: 1866  M Quarter in YORK  Volume 09D  Page 49

Frederick Augustus was baptised 8 Mar 1866 s/o Jonas, a Stonemason, & Mary.

A transcript of a marriage in 1886 in Hull of Frederick Curtis & Elizabeth Wrigglesworth has his father as John Ness Curtis, although there is another marriage in 1888 in York, so I'm not sure if this is the same person.

Possibly the older boys - including Henry - were born to a previous marriage & so registered under a different surname  ???

JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.
