Amelia Long - b Gosport ca. 1839
« on: Monday 13 March 17 13:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello there

Amelia Long married a William Wells in Folkstone on 6 January 1864 - on the marriage registration her father is named as George Long, a farmer.

In the later censuses she stated that she was born in Gosport, Hampshire in about 1839.  However in the earlier censuses I can only find an Amelia Long in Alverstoke with parents Joseph (a labourer) and Frances.

Can anyone find another option?  When she married her husband's father was called George and I do wonder if the person completing the marriage certificate did not make a mistake.

Many thanks for your help

what names witness?
where (geographically) is the bride before marriage at census and with whom?

Check the births c1839 for more than one Amelia?

The witnesses were Henry Brushwood and Eliza Griffiths

In 1841 and 1851 the Amelia I can find is at home in Alverstoke, and in 1861 she was working as a maid in Farnham.

All the best

I should also say that the Eliza Griffiths who witnessed the marriage married a year later to a Richard Munford as a spinster.  In the 1871 census she was born in Pembrokeshire so there are no obvious family links

That's the one - sorry I typed Farnham rather than Fareham!

I wondered if that was the same one and you had typed Farnham by mistake but as you had also said she was a Maid,  not a Cook I posted it  ;D  ;D

Do you have evidence that the Joseph Long who was living in Alverstoke 1841 was married to Frances Besant and was not her father in law  :-\  He was around 65 she was 35 (47 in 1851)  1841 does not give relationships
