Joseph Long married Fanny Bezant 18/4/1825 Alverstoke, Hampshire.

However, he was a Labourer (not a farmer) and in 1851 when Frances and children are on parish relief she is still shown as married and husband Joseph appears to be in the workhouse aged 80 in Southampton (he too shown as married).  He died there later that year and age jumps to 87 per GRO index (perhaps mistranscription and should be 81).

I would say their daughter Amelia is indeed your lady (there seems to be no other candidate).   She was born and baptised early 1841.  Her father died 1851, her mother in 1856 - as to the marriage certificate she may have forgotten her fathers name and made up one (he certainly wasn't a farmer) but then again, as you say, it may have been a mistake made by the cleric when recording.

Thanks Annette  ;D

I agree that it is very likely that she is 'your' Amelia.  She may not have known what his first name or occupation was and just made it up at the time.

I did think about that but all I can find is a Joseph Long marrying a Frances, and no George marrying a Frances, also that Amelia's baptism is online and shows the parents as Joseph and Frances

I'm going to the Society of Genealogists tomorrow to look at the Gosport registers which I can't find online - only Alverstoke. Maybe that will throw something up

Hi,

I have found the following;

Amelia Long          bapt. 4-5-1824 Porstsea St.John d/o Robert & Charlotte
Amelia Ann Long   bapt. 3-6-1827 Portsea St.Mary d/o George & Ann
Amelia Long          bapt. 7-3-1841 Alverstoke d/o Joseph & Frances
either of the last 2 could be yours.

Just listed these to show there were others.

Thank you for pointing those out

I got quite excited about the one whose father was George, but Amelia Ann Long married in Portsea in 1848 so she can't be the one I am looking for

Hopefully some progress at the SoG this afternoon

All the best

Well I went through the baptisms at Gosport from 1835 to 1850 and there were no Long baptisms at all and no Amelias either (I was checking in case there was an illegitimacy and later name change) so I'm guessing the one born to Elizabeth and Joseph has to be it.

Thank you to everyone for their input
