ROSE MARY GILKES - 1896
« on: Monday 13 March 17 17:33 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying eagerly to research my great grandmother, Rose Mary Gilkes (parents - James Gilkes & Elizabeth Fitzgerald) I found this profile of her to be extremely helpful (http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/dbsig/dbsig-quick-search.php?dbsig_num=1&surname=GILKES&view=10103) but I want to know where this information came from and hopefully where I can get more. I've discovered she worked as domestic help in Leeds, Ontario for the Henry Connor family. I know this is just short of a shout into the open, but Im really hoping someone can help me!

Thank you

Welcome to RootsChat

Ancestry has a comprehensive family tree (there are 2 trees) on Rose Gilkes and family with some photographs of a couple of the children - perhaps you could contact the owner - information looks very similar to that on the link you gave.

Thank you for the reply!
I had seen a marriage record for Rose & William Hogan before but the one in the link is a different version of it, which is exciting to see! Funny enough, I think the ancestry tree you are referring to is actually the one I have built. Im good at going down the tree to more recent generations, thats easy! I just don't know what happened to Rose, when she died etc, what sort of things her mother was in prison for and that kind of thing.

Thank you for your help

I dont have anything passed the 1921 census. On the marriage record I got off of ancestry, theres a sticker in the bottom left that says DIVORCE and a date for 1961. So I'm assuming she and my great-grandfather split up. Other than that, all I have to go off of is stories from my family - which aren't very coherent. I do know that their son Ted, (my grandfather) was a very popular stock car racer in Toronto in the 50s and 60s. As well, Rose's husband (after the divorce i assume) was in a relationship with my grandmother's (Ted's wife) mother. Other than that, I cannot find any obituary, death records, or anything like that!
