There's an article in London Evening Standard 05 February 1853 regarding John Henry Gerhardt alias Garratt who was charged with conspiracy to defraud. He was transported for seven years.

Perhaps this is your man?

@ JJen

Thank you they are great finds and that sounds like him (age is right and place of birth), and of course Garratt is the name his brother later changes his name to.

much appreciated
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

could his occupation be "Seaman"?  It looks like the first letter has been altered

Suz

I had thought of seaman but then my thought about that is why not just say sailor ?

usually the description of  a sailor is "Seaman"

I read it - after a few minutes pondering - as 'Seaman', which was the usual way of referring to sailors, either that or mariner, from my experience.

Durham/Yorkshire: Sedgwick/Sidgwick, Shadforth

I can't recall seeing "Sailor" in a census.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
