Robert Hoff Bryan, born 1810, Clock and Watchmaker.

Hello There,

The above person was one of my three times great granddad's brother in - law's. He was born in 1810, in Alford Lincolnshire, probably to a John Bryan, and an Elizabeth, (nee Hoff).
Robert married Elizabeth Hunter, in Barrow, Lincolnshire in October 1835.

Anyway, I have recently been trying to find out more information about his Clock making, and where he was based at certain times. I know that he was in Lincoln, by the time of the 1841 Census.
But apparently, before this he was at: "The Square, Retford". This is according to the book: "Lincolnshire Clockmakers", that somebody passed information onto me.

Does anyone please know of any Watch and Clockmakers, who were at this address in Retford, between the years 1835 - 1841?/ Know if Robert is in any directories from this period please?

I can't seem to find him. Or were no Trade Directories published for Retford for the above years?

Any information at all would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you for this. So should this read: "East Retford" rather than Hartford then?
I think that is where "The Square" in Retford is.

Thank you for this.  :)It is interesting that Robert was working in Retford when he got married. One of Elizabeth's Brothers, Edward Wilson Hunter, married a Harriet Clark in East Retford a year later in 1836. It surprises me how far people seem to have travelled, before the Railways came. Another of my ancestors siblings was born in Canwick near Lincoln. He married down near Bognor Regis, in the early part of the 19th Century.

Not sure where this information comes from, the Grooms abode is East HARTFORD as has already been pointed out by Trish. East Hartford in Northumberland and East Retford in Nottinghamshire are 143 miles apart.

This comes from: "The Stamford Mercury" dated Friday 23 October 1835. I found it on The British Newspaper Archive at the Library yesterday, regarding the Marriage:
"On the 19th inst.., at Barrow, (by the Rev. G. G. Egremont, Vicar) Mr. Robt. Hoff Bryan, Watchmaker, of East Retford, to Elizabeth, Youngest daughter of Mr. John Hunter, a respectable farmer, of the former place."
So the reference to East Hartford was likely to have been a transcription error.
