Caleb emerson
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 01:23 GMT (UK) »
Its been several years trying to chase the origins of Caleb Emerson born c1794 died 1828 in Everton Liverpool England. Caleb married Elisabeth McKie is Scotland in Jan 1818 and had the first child Michael late Dec 1818 in Scotland he and his wife had several more children in Scotland, Ireland and presumably in England where they were christened. Caleb was a surgeon in the Royal Navy and possibly in Dublin. He is buried in a joint grave with 2 of his sons in the Necropolis Everton. Caleb's son's Caleb came to Australia and Alexander went to Canada his daughter and wife both Elisabeth returned to Scotland after his death in 1828. His wife died in 1856 in Inch Wigtownshire Scotland and his daughter seems to have disappeared. If any one has any info on Dr Caleb it would be great I know of several ships he was on but do not have his parents whom I love to find

Sorry to be pedantic here?! But I think it's fascinating! :D

In the UK a surgeon is always referred to as "Mr" rather the "Doctor".

Physicians had to under go University education, in order to gain a degree in medicine.

Surgeons were always apprenticed to a surgeon. Then an examination  by The Surgeons Company (later the Royal College of Surgeons); they were awarded a Diploma rather than a Degree, and were/are unable to call themselves Doctor! ;D

The records at the National Archives that are perhaps most pertinent to your man are the 'Entry Book of Surgeons & Surgeons' Mates, 1803-1823. Here is a link to them here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C513494

Unfortunately they appear to be indexed alphabetically by ship rather than by person. There are also over 700 pages to the record. However they appear to be free to download.

I know of several ships he was on

Where do the names of these ships that you know of come from?, having checked a number of records I haven't turned up anything for him.

As to Caleb's parents one ancestry tree suggests born in Ireland (no date shown) whereas a couple of others suggest born in Wigtownshire, Scotland about 1795. Same trees show Elizabeth as born 1798 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire.

Marriage of Caleb & Elizabeth took place on 12th Jan 1818 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland for reference.

I cannot see a baptism for Caleb as yet, but will keep looking.

Hope this all helps.

Kind regards

David
