Well, after a couple of trouble-free days I think we've done it :D

After OH's repeated use of Avast, and Iobit's uninstaller, and trawling (carefully!) through the registry, my recycle bin now contains over 16,000 items.  A combination of the techniques suggested above have got me to where I wanted to be at the beginning of this thread ;D
