Albany Storer Johnstone
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 17:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi, The above married Mary Ann Stamp in dec q 1841. By 1851 census Mary is described as a widow. She has with her 2 daughters from previous marriage-Amy R & Mary Ann R Stamp and a son George A (ALBANY) Johnstone. With wonderful names like these apart from George Albany Johnstones marriage on and in the same church as his half sister Mary Ann in 1863 I can find nothing else. Where did dad go/die and the son? Cant even find a birth ref for George. His mothers maiden name was Raymond, married John Stamp, married Albany 1841.

Thanks

John

It's tricky to help with the son as you haven't said where they were in 1851 or what George's age and birthplace are said to be.

Hi, 1851 census ref ho107/1510/72/6. Albany G Johnstone is 8 so born c 1842/3 in St Pancras. The Albany Johnson in Kendal was 87 years old when he died so not him. Also after George Albany Johnstone married Jane Dalley in 1863 they went on to have 2 sons with mmn as Dalley. Alfred Hope Johnstone 1866 (died 1896) and Edward Francis Johnstone 1865 (died 1877) both born Kensington reg dist. Cant find them on 1871 census though!!

Enumerated in 1851 as Albany G JOHNSON 8 b Marylebone, which is why I couldn't find him.

Do you know the name of the child of Mary Ann Stamp who in September 1841 was "not 12 months old" according to records of the trial of the natural father John Alexander Willmett for assault upon both Mary Ann Stamp and also medical student Albany Johnstone? (Evening Mail, 20 Sep 1841).

This child would be a little old to be George if the age given for him in 1851 is accurate, but worth investigating I would think in case Albany took him on and gave him his surname.  They might have adjusted his age to make him appear legitimate.
