Mary Johnston - Daughter of...

Hi Rootschatters!

I am trying to decipher the text in this box - many the part which says who the father of Mary is! This record is regarding her widower's remarriage, so strange that it should be used at all!

I think I know what it says but wish for confirmation! It seems to be different from what was written on Mary's death certificate!

I would read it as Busines...., probably Businessman, his occupation/profession.

I originally thought that too.

However the death certificate lists her father as Alexander Johnston, Soldier.
So on re-assessing...does it say Pensioner? As in the Chelsea variety?

Strange how they are all called Johnston, and odd how Alexander and Thomas have been muddled. Who is the informant on the death cert?

I had the same thought about all the surnames being the same.

I think you need to go backwards a bit further first and find a baptism record and a marriage record to properly identify her father.  Remember, she isn't around to make sure the death registration and subsequent re-marriage have the correct details on them.

After that, if you still think her father is a Chelsea Pensioner there are indexes on familysearch and images on findmypast.
