John Newington was buried St Bartholomews Burwash.  The inscription on his MI is said to record:

Left side:
Here lieth ye body of
John Newington
of Withernden in Ticehurst
Gentleman
Who departed this life
ye 28th of April
in ye year of our Lord ye 1706
in ye 66 years of his age

This poses two questions for me:
If he was of Withernden in Ticehurst why was he buried at Burwash?
Where is Withernden?

I know there is a site that will provide this information but  am having a seniors moment and cannot remember it.  :-[

Any ideas?

Possibly Witherenden, between Stonegate and  Burwash Common?

Stonegate is within the parish of Ticehurst, so it seems likely that Witherenden is too.

See it  on an 1874 map

From Ticehurst, go SW to Stonegate, and keep going, and you find Witherenden Hill.

There may have been a Manor in Burwash associated with the Newington family at one point, according to Google.

There was a Newington family at Witherenden Mill ( a corn mill) in the 1841 census, which confirms that the hamlet of Witherenden is/was in the parish of Ticehurst.

Gosh that's embarrassing.... I should have looked up the census.  ;D

Thanks ShaunJ and PrawnCocktail.

So would the family have baptised their children at Ticehurst???

It might be worth checking registers of St Mary, Ticehurst. There are Newingtons buried there too including a lady in 1779 (6 Jan) who was "wife of Joseph, gentleman of Withernden"

There is a marriage in 1675 at Ticehurst for John Newington of Maidstone to Martha Barnes of Burwash which may be relevant.
