St Edmundsbury Cathedral - Marriages ?
« on: Friday 17 March 17 13:01 GMT (UK) »
After a lot of fruitless searching, I am beginning to wonder if my ancestor's marriage in 1675 or 1676 was in St Edmondsbury Cathedral. Is this plausible? If so, are any records available?

It seems at that time to be the parish church for the north of bury st Edmunds, known as st James church, only becoming a cathedral in the early 1900s.

According to the national archives records for st James cathedral are at Suffolk archives but their website does not mention any parish records.

Mike

Edit, It seems likely that weddings took place there.

Hi Mike

Many thanks for your prompt and informative reply. Since my first post, I have unearthed some circumstantial evidence that suggests the marriage might have taken place in Mendham. My understanding is that pre-1678 parish records for Mendham did not survive. So, I think I will have to make do with Boyd's marriage index. The FindMyPast transcript of the latter gives the 'place' as "Archd" (as opposed to Archd M. L.). Even if this is a reference to an Archdeaconry of Suffolk Marriage Licence, I think I am no further forward because those 1675 ML's do not appear to have survived. C'est la vie!

If they don't survive, what was Boyd's source? If you're looking at the Hurrion/Pallant marriage in 1675, a second entry in Boyd's index gives the parish as Sibton.

A very good question, what was Boyd's source ???

The marriage I am looking at is Samuel Leman & Dorothy Armiger 1675. From his father's Will, I know that Samuel (ABT 1635) was at Mendham in 1658. Dorothy was baptised at Letheringham in 1645, but I have no evidence to suggest the marriage took place there.   :-\

Just wondering if Archd might be Archdeaconry of Sudbury instead of Suffolk? Marriage licences were issued there in the 1600s, and transcripts have been published from 1684 onwards. Could be worth asking the Suffolk RO if any earlier ones survive from that Archdeaconry? Just a thought.

Yes, I agree that is probably my next best step.
