County Cavan Marriage
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 00:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping a new pair of eyes can find record of my gggrandparents wedding. Patrick Ruddin married Anne McEnroe in early 1870's. Their first child, Catherine, was born 10 Mar 1873. The 1901 census lists that they were both born in County Cavan. My gggrandfather was born in Cordingin and they lived on his farm after they were married. I have poured over the marriage registries, but can not find one for them. I have tried odd spelling and abbreviations...and still nothing. I did find a Pat Ruddin who married a Bridget McEnroe, but, the fathers names don't seem to match the children's naming pattern. (Grooms father was Mick, brides was Phil)The date of 8 Feb 1872 is right, the groom was from Cordingin and the bride was from Tunnyin? Thanks for your help! Sheila

I realize that, but on every other document-census/children's birth registrations she is Anne...not Bridget.

And we thought that Patrick Ruddin fathers name was Matthew. And I thought Mick (as it's listed on the marriage registry that I did find) was a nickname for Michael..not Matthew.

Forget using any naming pattern to figure out names of grandparents, etc.
What do you mean by "The date of 8 Feb 1872 is right"? do you mean right as in it's before birth of first known child (1873) or do you have the marriage date from another sources such as family record?
Sometimes people used 2 names (first or middle for example) so it would be a good idea to check birth certificates for all the children to see if mother's name is the same each time.

I can't see them in 1901 census together but there is an Anne in Cordingin-

Hi Aghadowey,
Yes I just meant that the timeframe works before the birth of the first child.   There were 10 children- Catherine, Matthew, Mary Ann, Bridget, Rose, Margaret, Patrick, Susan, James and Bernard -and I have looked at every registration. All list the Mom as Anne. That is her on the 1901 census. She is actually listed on the 1911 census as Susan.  ??? Although the name Bridget does work as the 3rd girl being named after the mother.
And Hallmark, I saw that Oldcastle registration too, but, if I type in variations of Rudden I don't get a match.
So could Mick be a nickname for Matthew?
Thank you both for your help. Sheila

I was looking at this earlier and got more and more confused. I was trying to find the children's baptisms, having found the same Anne in the 1901 Census and The birth of Rose and Catherine in the Civil Reg, I thought they would be in Laragh http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0847 but I couldn't find them.
There are no marriages for this parish and not great coverage for some of the surrounding parishes either.

Do you know which parish the children were baptised in?

The 1911 census entry with Patrick's wife is a bit worrying- especially since Patrick signed the form. Also says married 41 years (so c1870)-

There is a Patrick Rudden and Susan Clarkin having children, including a son Matthew in 1876-

Rose Ann in 1877-

This is your Matthew's birth (1874)-
