Joining up videos
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 16:43 GMT (UK) »
i have several videos which I've taken myself and I wish to join them up. i have been told that there is no need to download a separate programme as Windows contains such a facility.

I'm using Windows 7, but can't find this programme, can anyone help me find the location of it ?

If Microsoft had this option, I am sure it would be in Windows Media Player - but I haven't found it.

There are several video joiner programs available to download free - most will do the job but be careful of "free trial" versions as they tend to put text or a watermark over the video (which spoils the viewing pleasure!).

Windows Movie Maker used to be supplied with Windows, but not for quite some time.  It should be able to conbine videos (I've not used it but it wouldn't be much of a movie maker if it can't).

You can still get a copy as a free download though it is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Windows Movie Maker was part of Windows Essentials 2012, a free suite of tools.

Windows Essentials 2012 suite reached end of support on January 10, 2017 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/18614/windows-essentials)

While Microsoft don't offer it anymore, you can still download it, for example from
http://downloads.techradar.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker
http://www.windows-movie-maker.org/windows-movie-maker.html

Depending on the package you may have to select which tools from the suite you wish to install. Windows Movie Maker comes with Windows Photo Gallery, but you won't need any of the others.

I use Windows Movie Maker, and find that once the files have imported both video and audio (it can take some time without any messages indicating how long it will take) it is fairly intuitive to use.  However, success depends a bit on the format and length of the videos, and the processing power of your computer.

This article suggests free alternatives

How long are the videos?  They can "stall" your machine if they are each quite large files. A computer with a lot of RAM would be useful. How are you going to keep/publish the final result?
