Aberdeenshire Scotland & NB, Canada: Fraser, Thomson, Connon, Bisset
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 23:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am researching the Fraser family where they mainly lived Aberdeenshire Scotland, and later John Connon Fraser 1874 immigrated to Canada.

Alexander Fraser and Margaret Thomson was married Sept 20, 1789.  Marriage notice states Alexander was a soldier in Sterling Castle and they were married in this parish.  No other information other than his wife's name. Know of one son

Alexander Fraser(b abt 1788 d. Oct 15, 1876 Newhills Aberdeen; confirms parents names) m. Jane Milne June 28, 1807.  He was a soldier in the 72 Regiment of Foot.

Children: Robert Fraser (b. abt 1809-11 only states father's name; d. Nov 17, 1867 ) m. Helen Bisset
              large gap in the children
              Anne Fraser (b. June 12, 1830)
              William Fraser (b. July 14, 1833)
              Helen Fraser (b. July 1, 1836)
              Jane Fraser (b. July 22, 1840)

Robert Fraser and Helen Bisset's children all born Newhills, Aberdeen
             Robert Fraser b. Nov. 1833
             Alexander Fraser b. Dec. 8 1835
             James Fraser b. Nov. 20 1837
             William Fraser b. June 18 1840 m. Jane Connon Dec. 27 1862
             Margaret Fraser b. Aug 22, 1831
Charles Fraser b. 1843 (witness on father's death registration)
             John Fraser b. 1845
Martha Fraser b. 1850 m. John Livingston May 21, 1881 Woodside Aberdeen Old Machar
(have letter's written from William Fraser mentioning his sister)
             Ann Fraser b. 1852
             Peter Fraser b. 1847

William Fraser and Jane Connon's children all born Newhills Aberdeen
            Alexander Fraser b. Mar 1, 1863
            Eleanor Fraser b. Jan 1 1865 d. Jan 22, 1865
            William Fraser b. Jun 8, 1866
John Connon Fraser b. Feb 1 1868, died Aug 16, 1965 New Brunswick Canada.

John Connon Fraser immigrated to Canada with his mother's twin brother John Connon and his wife Elizabeth Campbell in abt 1874.  They resided in New Brunswick Canada.
John moved to Bar Harbor, Maine, USA for a few years where he was married to Agnes Bunker and they had 3 daughters  Jennie b 1892, Elizabeth 1894, and Margaret 1895.  Divorced and he returned to Canada and had a second family with Winnifred Stacy and another 6 children were born.

I am looking for any information on any of these families, all help will greatly be appreciated.  Not sure why John would be coming to Canada at such a young age when his parents were still alive.

Thank you

Fran

large gap in the children
Anne Fraser (b. June 12, 1830)
William Fraser (b. July 14, 1833)
Helen Fraser (b. July 1, 1836)
Jane Fraser (b. July 22, 1840)
How sure are you that these children are all siblings? 33 years after the marriage is an exceptionally long time for a child to be born - if Jane Milne was say 18 when she married in 1807, she would have been over 40 before any of the four younger ones was born, and 51 when Jane was born.

In fact it looks to me as if there are two different couples named Alexander Fraser and Jane/Jean Milne.

One (presumably the Al Fraser and Jane Milne who were married in Aberdeen St Nicholas on 28 June 1807) had at least four recorded children in Newhills, Aberdeenshire
Jean, born 5 April 1816
Alexander, born 20 October 1818
William Stephen, born 2 December 1823
Alexander, born 20 December 1826

In 1841 this family is at Mugiemoss, parish of Newhills
Alexander Fraser, 51, stone quarrier
Jean Fraser, 52
William Fraser, 18
Alexander Fraser, 6
Isobel Fraser, 20
Christian Fraser, 15
Janet Fraser, 12
all born Aberdeenshire

In 1851, at Mugiemoss, Newhills
Alexander Fraser, head, mar, 63, quarrier, born Old Meldrum
Jean Fraser, wife, mar, 62, born Kennethmont
Christian Fraser, daughter, unm 25
Janet Fraser, daughter, unm, 22
Alexander Fraser, son, unm, 17
The children all born in Newhills

In 1861 at Auchmull, Newhills
Alexander Fraser, head, wid, 73, quarrier, born Old Meldrum
Alexander Fraser, son, unm, 28, no occupation (lame), born Newhills

and incidentally you can fill in some of the gaps in time with the three daughters Isobel, Christian and Janet.

The other couple were married in Dunnottar on 18 June 1825 and had at least six children in the parish of Dunnottar, Kincardineshire
Alexander, born 20 December 1826
Anne, born 12 June 1830
William, born 14 July 1833
Helen, born 1 July 1836
Jane, born 22 July 1840
James, born 1 June 1844

This family were ar Criggie, Dunnottar, in 1841
Alexander, 45, cartwright
Jane, 35
Alexander, 15
Ann, 11
William, 8
Hellen, 5
Jane, 1
all born Kincardineshire

They were at Nether Criggie, Dunnottar in 1851; all born Dunnottar
Alexander Fraser, head, wid, 54, cartwright
Ann Fraser, daughter, 20
Jane Fraser, daughter, 18
James Leighton, servant, unm, 18, apprentice wright

As Alexander was 54 in 1851, he would have been born in about 1896/7, so he could not possibly be the one who married in 1807, even if the other couple were not still alive and kicking and living in Newhills.

Information from http://www.freecen.org.uk and https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi. Never trust anything you find online unless it is an image of an original certificate. That includes not trusting what I have written. Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and look up all the original baptism, marriage and census records that are relevant to your Frasers.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for this information and clarification, I did get my information from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and ancestry.com and always try to follow up with actual documents. I was confused with Alexander and Margaret Thomson.  It was the only marriage I found and seemed odd with the huge gap in the children.  I will go over everything again, truly appreciate your help.
Cheers
