Isabella and Christine Riddell /Riddle
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 16:06 GMT (UK) »

I found a headstone in Canongate Cemetery Edinburgh on it were George Riddell his wife Helen Greenfield and some of their family.
I have been able to find BMD deaths except for two of their daughters

Isabella and Christine both are mentioned on the headstone but can't find a birth or death for either of them.

George and Ellen were married in Edinburgh in 1854.

No birthyears included in post

What census do they last appear on?

Any years of death shown on the headstone?

1881 LDS Census transcription -
Pirries Close , Cannongate , Edinburgh , Midlothian
George Riddle 52 b. Leith Edinburgh
Elen G Riddle 54 b. Leith Ediburgh
David Riddle 18 b. Edinburgh
George Riddle 16 b. Edinburgh
Elen G Riddle 14 b. Edinburgh
Mary K Riddle 12 b. Edinburgh
Benjamin Riddle 8 b. Edinburgh
George Riddle 2 grandson b. Edinburgh

Going by births on the IGI I think that is the family , can't see anything for an Isabella or a Christine.

Hi,
I am sorry I have no information on either of these two .
Nothing on census no BMD but they are both on the headstone no dates of either births or deaths
It says  their sons and daughters Isabella , Christina ,Mary , Thomas and George .
I have found Mary , Thomas and George births and deaths.
They named another daughter Mary and son George which I know was quite a common thing to do.

Thank you.

What, exactly, is the full text on the stone?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

It's a bit small and hard to read, but it looks to me as if the children listed must all have died young. Perhaps George didn't bother with a gravestone until Helen died, and then had a list of all the ones who died in infancy or early childhood added, without remembering their exact dates of birth or death. If Isabella and Christina died unbaptised very soon after birth, they could be in the registers and/or burial records with no given name. Or they might have been stillborn - it's not impossible for parents to give a name to a stillborn child.

Dear all,
Thank you for your help and advice
I have just gone into OPR's on SP  and found the deaths of both Christina and Isabella in 1853 must have been near the end of  the day on my last visit to NRH.

My sincere apologies
