Going back to the original post, I feel the same about Essex

?
Essex Parish Registers are online at the SEAX site! Yes, it is a subscription site. But you can just have a short sub if you want. If you live a long way away, then probably cheaper than going to the Record Office.
But it means all the PRs are accessible to anyone anywhere in the World to look through, exactly as you would if you visited the Record Office in person.
Wish there was the same for all counties.

Wow that sounds like a great solution for you StevieSteve. Any miracles for me?😀

This link mentions David wigley of Hampton bishop as a basket maker, and possibly a member of the Romany community.

If the Wigleys of Hampton bishop were extended family of a community of travellers then they would spend most of their year travelling the surrounding counties selling their wares.  They may have tended to marry within this community, but not always in Herefordshire.

Rootschat has a board for travelling people.

Mike

The names DAvid and Thomas Wigley, and location of Hampton Bishop makes this entry on the wills and probate index of interest https://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/info/200164/herefordshire_archive_and_records_centre/244/wills_search?forename=thomas&surname=wigley&parish=&executornames=&from=&to=

Thank you Spidermonkey and to others who have replied to my message.

I am ekeing out some information at snails pace on this line. However have contacted Hereford Archives and Records to elicit whether I can pay for some basic record look-ups. It seems such a shame to have to take other people's time to do such rudimentary research when one gets much more satisfaction doing it oneself.

To be honest, digitising archives etc is a very low priority when it comes to Council budgets.  As Mazi said earlier we have a county population of under 200,000 people.  To put that into context, our whole county (population) is smaller than Solihull, or Rochdale, or Milton Keynes.  It is far more of a priority to allocate finances to Education or Social Care - things that can actually save lives.  This is hard for me to write - my husband is an archaeologist, I used to be an archaeologist and we have both a passion for history and archives.  Just not at the expense of vital services.
