John GRALEY, Born 1835.

Hello,

The only entry I can find for John GRALEY, other than a probable criminal record (details later), is the 1891 England Census, showing he is a Coal Miner living in Derbyshire with his wife Eliza and Grand Daughter, Elizabeth (Reference: RG12/2766/6, p.6). 

He was convicted of larceny from the person on 06/01/1851 and sentenced to transportation for 7 years, commuted, and released early on licence from Portsmouth Prison on 16/01/1855, subsequently revoked and returned to Portsmouth to complete full 7 years on 11/05/1855.

I wonder if anyone can help fill in any BDM details please.

Where does he give his birth place as in the census?

Good  Evening JJ,

I am totally confused to say the least.

The 1891 Census does not conform to the earlier 1841, 1851, 1871 versions, which give his native place as Leicestershire not Nottinghamshire.  The details look so convincing but I am not convinced that the three earlier enumerations are the same person as 1891.

I am not a member of FindMyPast but if someone is, and has access to the Crimes, Prisons & Punishment index, it may uncover his next of kin/address details on his release from Portsmouth Prison.  Maybe I should buy some credits ::) ::)
