Just a thought; but given the family were in Hawick in 1901 could the 18 month old James have been born in "Duns" in the borders?

That would be closer to the area?

according to the census page he was born in dumbartonshire, dumbarton

I take it you've tried alternative spellings such as "Phin" etc?

Strange how the birth isn't there.  ???

i managed to get hold of his army service records. It says he was born in dumbarton, Glasgow to irish parents. His army records have a birth date of 1 august 1903 [but i suspect this may be made up]
