Former Mayor of Newark Charles Clutterbuck
« on: Monday 20 March 17 21:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm that the Charles Clutterbuck who became Mayor of Newark in 1945 is the same Charles Clutterbuck who was a butcher in Newark for many years at 44-46 Kirkgate. I've seen newspaper reports of butchery related events that he (future Mayor) attended as a councillor so there seems a link. Other attendees had links to local butchers.
Mayor Charles became a councillor in 1930 and butcher Charles addresses for the period were Lynton, Beacon Hill and 109 London Road, Newark, with second wife Elizabeth. Butcher Charles born 16-6-1878 and died 10-3-1961. Hope someone can help, thanks, Comberton

Have you looked for him on the 1911 census to establish his occupation?

Have you looked for him on the 1939 register?

Probate entry shows his address as 121 Lime Grove Newark on Trent.  Probate to widow Elizabeth plus a solicitor

Thanks for replying Carole, 1911 Butcher Charles is at butcher shop in Kirkgate, 1939 the Beacon Hill address. The Lime Grove address is also him, I just couldn't prove he was the Mayor but 1939 only shows one Charles Clutterbuck in Newark so that may be the proof. I hadn't thought to look for another Charles in 1939 when I know the councillor is likely to live locally. Thanks for the nudge.
