Thank you, yes, the account of his trial said that he was not long married.

larkspur said that no burial was recorded for Daniel Diggle, but this extract from his confession shows that he clearly expected to be buried there:

"I would exhort with the earnestness of a dying man, not only my immediate companions, but all who have been engaged in Luddism, to break off from practices, which only involve themselves, and others, in trouble and ruin. When they observe a young man just 21 years of age, and who has only been married about as many weeks, brought to the scaffold, by those very practices—when they see the anguish of my afflicted wife and parents—when they pass by the church-yard of Basford, and observe the graves of Bamford, Towle, and myself—"
Was his burial not recorded because of the manner of his death, or was he buried elsewhere, perhaps in unconsecrated ground?
regards,
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Have you seen this link it does say that Daniel was buried at Basford on the same evening of his hanging so may not have been recorded in the church records.

Thanks, yes, I had seen it, but am a bit distrusting of newspaper accounts as they had Daniel's mother dying very soon afterwards of excessive grief, when she didn't die until 1827! It's just odd that such a locally significant death wasn't recorded in the PRs.

hi Lesley,

When I'm next in Nottingham Archives I'll have a look and see if I can find anything for you.

Sunlaws there are 49 burials for Basford in 1817, no Daniel Diggle. This is NFHS burial Parish register.
Hopefully Nottsgirl can dig something up, she is very good  ;) oops no pun intended there  ::)

Thank you, Nottsgirl, offer much appreciated.

And thank you, larkspur, for confirming the absence of record for Daniel Diggle. I too hope Nottsgirl doesn't do anything drastic- there are penalties for grave-robbing ;)
