Looking for baptism of Hannah Wallas possibly Westham abt 1667
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Unfortunately I don't have much to aid the search  to locate my  8th great grandmother Hannah Wallas.

Hannah married Thomas Bovis 17 Jun 1695 at Westham.  The transcription states Hannah was OTP.

Thomas was baptised 15 Dec 1667 at Westham son of Matthew Bovis.

Hannah was buried at Westham 16 Apr 1717.  Thomas was buried 1743 at Westham.

All assistance gratefully received.

I can't see her in Westham with any surname variation.

There is a Hannah Willis baptised at Hastings All Saints on 7 March 1667 d/o Thomas & Elizabeth.  Hastings is just along the coast from Westham which was a village to the west of Eastbourne at that time.  If Thomas Willis was a fisherman or associated with that occupation then there is the possibility that the family moved along the coast to Westham.

Hannah was otp on her marriage but of course that doesn't mean she was born/baptised there.

I meant to say that I also checked Eastbourne, there was only one church there at the time - St Mary's - but no record for any Wallas or any other spelling.

The problem could well be exacerbated by the strong local dialect at that time if the priest at the church came from outside the area resulting in some pretty weird spellings.

My cousin lives at St Leonards on Sea which is just to the west of Hastings and her half brother is a retired priest now living in Hastings and who acts as locum priest at the churches there when the regular incumbent is on leave etc. - he finds the local 'dialect' or sayings hard to understand after his life working both abroad and in places well to the north of this area.  The local fishermen and their families were and still are close knit communities drawn together by the dangers of their occupation plus, on occasions, the secrecy entailed in smuggling.   ;D  At least one of my ancestors there was definitely involved in that 'trade' and another in the mid 1800s was rumoured to get some of his supplies of spirits in a similar fashion. At one time he employed a lad with a pony and trap to take 'tired' customers home at closing time which I think was quite enterprising of him and probably encouraged 'just one more for the road' as they were certain of getting home and not falling down drunk somewhere.  ::)

Hello artifis,

I have been to England but not spent much time so haven't had the opportunity to experience the different dialects.

However I hope to remedy that in the near future.
