These blessed Hankeys
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 16:44 GMT (UK) »
Further help required please regarding an issue I've been wrangling with for months.

Joseph Hankey 1760-1847 married Elizabeth 'Betty' Eaton 1757-1839 at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth on 13th August 1781.

I always had one of their children, Thomas, born 1788, at Crowley who went on to marry Sarah Dutton at Wybunbury in 1809.

This has been brought into serious doubt by another researcher who has given me the details of another Thomas 1783-1861 who married Mary Dale at Davenham in 1814. This Thomas's birthplace is given as Marston.

Now I find it inconceivable Joseph & Betty would have had two surviving Thomas's yet both fit into the times-span. Which one is the interloper?

Any help, as per usual, would be greatly appreciated. David

Hate to cast another doubt in here, but there are two Thomas and Sarah Hankeys on the 1851 Census.

One is at Grind Stone Farm in Church Lawton, where Thomas is aged 69, born in Wybunbury. His son James, who is running the farm, was born at Coppenhall.

The other is at Lymm, aged 62 and born in Crowley.

The Wybunbury marriage is by license, and the license was for Thomas Hankey of Coppenhall, farmer, widower. Which looks like the Church Lawton one.

The other marriage of Thomas and Sarah (Wood) is at Daresbury, 6 Apr 1812.

Have to stop and make some tea now.

In the 1841 Census, I find a Thomas Hankey at Pump Stile, Witton, aged 50, married to a Margaret, aged 40. Children Joseph, George and Ann (aged 15 - 20), and several much younger ones. Joseph and George were baptised as sons of Thomas and Mary Hankey.

Further investigation reveals Thomas and Margaret (Coombs) got married in Runcorn Oct 30 1837, conveniently after Civil Registration started. Thomas was a widower - and his father was Joseph Hankey, Labourer.

I haven't managed to find a burial for a Mary Hankey

Hi PrawnCocktail,

Thank you for your replies. I am really at a loss on this one, however, I think it more likely that the one you have found at Lymm is him as that is far closer to his birthplace of Crowley than Church Lawton.  The Census also confirms his place of birth.

So, that being the case and if I am reading you correctly Thomas married Sarah Wood at Daresbury which again is far closer to Crowley and not Sarah Dutton at Wybunbury.

Thomas who married at Wybunbury does seem to be a bit of an outsider in this one!
